Walt Disney Company president and CEO, Bob Iger made the announcement with "Avatar" director James Cameron and
Fox Filmed Entertainment co-chairs and co-CEOs Jim Gianopulos and Thomas
Rothman. “James Cameron is a groundbreaking filmmaker and gifted storyteller who
shares our passion for creativity, technological innovation and delivering the
best experience possible,” said Iger. “With this agreement, we have the extraordinary opportunity to
combine James’ talent and vision with the imagination and expertise of
Disney.”
Cameron, Jon Landau, and their team at Lightstorm Entertainment will
serve as creative consultants as well as the Disney Imagineers, who will do the
construction. Together they will dream up ways for
Disney park guests to experience the world of Avatar like never before.
"Avatar" was meant to "celebrate our interaction with nature
and nature's wonder and diversity," said Cameron. "Putting our 'Avatar'
themed land into Animal Kingdom is extremely exciting."
Cameron told reporters the attraction would likely include animatronics,
rides, themed food and 3-D multimedia shows. The sequel to “Avatar,”
Cameron’s top-grossing film, is scheduled for release in December 2014.
“Avatar 3″ will be released the following year.
The “Avatar” movie, which was released in
late 2009, is the highest grossing film world wide ever, at $2.7 billion.
Construction is slated to
begin by 2013 and should be completed about four years later.
